The 30-second verdict

Semrush is the right choice if your marketing work spans more than organic search — paid ads, content, social and SEO under one roof is a genuine productivity win, and the data quality is close enough to Ahrefs that the breadth usually wins.

If you're purely an SEO shop, the calculus is closer: Ahrefs has a slight edge on backlink data and a cleaner product story, while Semrush's entry plan is cheaper and its content tools are better integrated. Either is defensible; using both "to compare" is how budgets die.

Start with the Pro trial, push it against your actual workflow for a week, and only then decide whether Guru's content tools and higher limits earn the upgrade. For teams already paying for separate PPC and content tools, Semrush can consolidate spend — that's where the value is strongest.

What is Semrush?

Semrush is the other half of the "Ahrefs vs Semrush" argument, and it takes a broader view of the problem. Where Ahrefs is laser-focused on search data, Semrush is a marketing platform: SEO tools sit alongside PPC research, content marketing, social media tracking, advertising analysis and lead generation. If your work spans organic and paid, or content and search together, that breadth is the point.

The product reorganised in late 2025 around "Semrush One" — bundled plans that combine the classic SEO toolkit with AI-search and content features. The classic SEO plans still exist and are what most buyers mean when they say Semrush: Pro, Guru and Business, priced per month with annual discounts.

Semrush's keyword database and backlink index are the second-largest after Ahrefs — close enough that most professionals consider them interchangeable for research. Where Semrush pulls ahead is workflow: Position Tracking, Site Audit, On-Page SEO checker, Content Marketing toolkit and advertising research all live in one login with shared projects.

How Semrush works

  1. Create a project for your domain — Semrush auto-connects Search Console data where you allow it.
  2. Research keywords, competitors and backlinks in the toolkit.
  3. Track positions daily and run site audits on a schedule.
  4. Use the Content Marketing tools for topic research, briefs and SEO writing checks.

Key capabilities

Keyword research — volume, difficulty, intent and CPC data for organic and paid planning.

Position Tracking — daily rank monitoring across devices, locations and (on higher plans) AI Overviews.

Site Audit — technical crawling with JavaScript rendering and prioritised issue reports.

Backlink analytics — referring domains, anchor text and competitor link profiles.

Content Marketing toolkit — topic research, SEO content templates, brand monitoring (Guru+).

Advertising research — competitors' paid keywords, ad copies and budgets.

Semrush One / AI-search features — track brand visibility across AI answers on bundled plans.

MCP and API access — connect Semrush data to AI assistants and custom reporting.

Semrush plans and pricing explained

SEO Classic — the plans most people buy:

Pro — $139.95/month ($117.33/month billed annually). 5 projects, 500 tracked keywords with daily updates, 100,000 pages crawled per month, keyword research and backlink tools. The freelancer and solo-business entry point.

Guru — $249.95/month ($208.33 annually). 15 projects, 1,500 keywords, 300,000 crawl pages, plus historical data, content marketing tools, multi-location/device tracking and Looker Studio integration. The plan growing teams land on.

Business — $499.95/month ($416.66 annually). 40 projects, 5,000 keywords, 1,000,000 crawl pages, Share of Voice metrics, API access and unlimited results per report. For agencies and larger in-house teams.

Semrush One bundles — Starter $199, Pro+ $299 and Advanced $549 per month. These combine SEO with AI-search visibility tracking, content tools and more; worth comparing if you want the all-in-one rather than just SEO.

Add-ons — extra users start at $45/month; Lead Generation toolkit $90/month; Base Report API access $10/month. Watch these — a Pro plan with two extra users is meaningfully more expensive than the headline price.

Trials — Semrush typically offers a 7-day free trial of Pro (card required, sometimes extended promotions). Check the current offer at signup.

Who it's really for

Semrush fits marketing generalists and small agencies — the people who own the whole funnel from keyword to ad to published article. It's the natural consolidation play: if you're paying for an SEO tool, a PPC tool and a content tool separately, Semrush can replace all three, and the shared project data means insights carry across channels instead of living in silos.

It fits less well for specialist SEO teams who only need search data — they pay for breadth they never touch — and for very small sites where the entry price plus add-ons outweighs the benefit over free tools.

What you should know before buying

Semrush's pricing is per-toolkit — the SEO Classic prices above don't include the One bundles or add-ons, and the gap between "what's advertised" and "what your team pays" is wider here than at Ahrefs because seats and add-ons stack up.

The platform is powerful and correspondingly complex — expect a learning curve measured in weeks, not days. Data limits on Pro (500 keywords, 100k crawl pages) are workable but not generous; Guru is where most teams actually settle.

For pure SEO data, Ahrefs and Semrush are close enough that either works — Semrush wins if you also do PPC, content marketing or social, and its entry price is friendlier. If all you need is keywords and rank tracking, a cheaper suite like SE Ranking covers most of it.

The honest framing: Semrush is less a single tool than a suite you grow into. The Pro plan covers the fundamentals well, and the value compounds as a team adopts Guru's content tools and Business's API access — but only if you'll actually use the extra channels. Buy it as infrastructure for a marketing function, not as a keyword checker, and trial it properly before committing to annual billing.

Strengths, limitations & watch-outs

What it does brilliantly

  • Breadth — SEO, PPC, content and social in one login
  • Second-best backlink and keyword data after Ahrefs
  • Content marketing tools built in, not bolted on
  • Daily position tracking on all paid plans
  • Agency-friendly project limits and reporting
  • 7-day trial to test before committing

Where it falls short

  • Pricey once add-ons and extra users stack
  • Complex interface — real learning curve
  • Pro limits (500 keywords, 100k pages) feel tight
  • Semrush One bundles complicate the pricing story
  • Data can lag Ahrefs on some backlink metrics

What to know before paying

  • Projects: 5 / 15 / 40 by tier
  • Tracked keywords: 500 / 1,500 / 5,000 daily
  • Crawl pages: 100k / 300k / 1M per month
  • Historical data: Guru and above only
  • API access: Business tier only
  • Extra users: from $45/mo each

Frequently asked questions

What is Semrush?+

An all-in-one marketing platform covering SEO, PPC, content marketing, social and advertising research — the broadest suite in the category.

How much does Semrush cost?+

SEO Classic: Pro $139.95/mo, Guru $249.95/mo, Business $499.95/mo (monthly billing; ~17% less annually). Semrush One bundles run $199–$549/mo. Extra users from $45/mo.

Is there a free Semrush trial?+

Yes — typically a 7-day Pro trial, card required. There's no permanent free plan.

Semrush vs Ahrefs — which is better?+

For pure SEO data they're close. Ahrefs edges backlink research; Semrush wins on breadth (PPC, content, social) and price at entry. Choose by workflow, not by benchmark charts.

What is Semrush One?+

The 2025 bundled product line combining SEO toolkit, AI-search visibility and content features — Starter $199, Pro+ $299, Advanced $549 per month.

Does Semrush track AI search visibility?+

Yes — on Semrush One bundles and higher tiers it monitors brand mentions in AI answers alongside classic rank tracking.

Can I use Semrush for PPC research?+

Yes — that's a core strength: competitor ad keywords, ad copies, budgets and PLA analytics, which Ahrefs doesn't match.

Is Semrush worth it for a solo blogger?+

Probably not at Business level — Pro covers basics, but bloggers on a budget get better value from focused tools. It's priced for marketers, not hobbyists.
