The 30-second verdict

Workable is one of the best applicant tracking systems for small and mid-sized companies that hire regularly.

It makes structured hiring easy: post to hundreds of job boards in one click, run candidates through a clear pipeline, collaborate with the hiring team and send offers. The new Workable Agent goes further, sourcing and screening candidates automatically and producing a ranked shortlist — useful when a small team is facing hundreds of applicants.

Read our full verdict ↓

The question is cost. Standard starts at $299 a month on annual billing even for companies with 20 or fewer employees, Premier and Enterprise are annual-only, and annual plans can't be cancelled early. AI agents beyond the free credits cost extra.

If you hire several people a year, use the 15-day trial — no credit card — with a real job, and keep track of which Enterprise features you actually need. If you only hire once or twice a year, a cheaper job board or a simpler tool will be better value.

What is Workable?

Workable is recruiting software — an applicant tracking system (ATS) — with an optional HR package for managing employees once they're hired. It's built for small and mid-sized companies that hire regularly and want a structured, professional process without enterprise complexity.

On the recruiting side, Workable handles everything from writing the job and posting it to more than 200 job boards, to sourcing candidates, screening applications, scheduling interviews, collaborating with the hiring team and sending offers. The HR package adds an HR information system, onboarding, time off, time tracking, e-signatures and payroll preparation.

Its newest addition is the Workable Agent: four AI recruiting agents built into the platform. The Job Brief Agent structures your hiring requirements, the Sourcing Agent finds passive candidates, the Screening Agent evaluates every applicant against an Ideal Candidate Profile across 14 dimensions, and the Engagement Agent follows up with candidates to fill in missing information — producing a ranked shortlist ready for interviews.

How Workable works

A typical hiring workflow is:

  1. Create a job — or let the Job Brief Agent structure the requirements — and publish it to your careers page and job boards in one click.
  2. Source candidates with Workable's sourcing tools, employee referrals or the Sourcing Agent.
  3. Screen applicants manually or with the Screening Agent, which ranks them against your ideal candidate profile.
  4. Move candidates through a pipeline, schedule interviews, share feedback with the hiring team and use video interviews, assessments or texting if your plan includes them.
  5. Send and approve offers, then hand new hires over to onboarding.
  6. Track hiring with reports, and manage employees in the HR package.

Key capabilities

Applicant tracking — A visual pipeline with unlimited active jobs (subject to fair use), hiring team collaboration, scorecards and interview scheduling.

Job posting and sourcing — One-click posting to 200+ job sites and a candidate sourcing suite.

Workable Agent — AI agents for job briefs, sourcing, screening and candidate engagement; the Job Brief Agent is included, and the others use AI credits.

Hiring plan — Requisitions, approval flows, budgeting and reporting.

Texting, video interviews and assessments — Add-ons on Standard; included on Premier and Enterprise, along with referrals.

Reporting — A custom report builder and additional permission sets on higher plans.

HR information system — Employee profiles, a searchable file store, an employee directory and an org chart.

Onboarding — Structured onboarding for new hires.

Time off and time tracking — Leave management and timesheets.

Payroll preparation and integrations — Prepare payroll data and connect to payroll providers.

Performance and engagement — An add-on on Standard, included on Enterprise.

9 languages and SSO — Native language options and single sign-on on higher plans.

Workable plans explained

Workable prices by your company's total employee headcount, not by recruiter seats or job count. You can buy a Recruiting package, an HR package or both, and bundling them saves up to 20%. The prices below are for the smallest band, 1–20 employees, and rise through eight bands up to 1,000 employees, with quotes above that.

Standard — $299 a month billed annually ($3,588 a year), or about $360 a month billed monthly. Core ATS, sourcing suite, unlimited jobs, hiring plan, custom report builder and additional permission sets. Texting ($89 a month), video interviews ($109 a month) and assessments ($59 a month) are add-ons; Performance & Engagement is $39 a month.

Premier — $599 a month, annual only ($7,188 a year). Adds texting, video interviews, assessments and referrals, plus a dedicated account manager, custom onboarding and single sign-on.

Enterprise — $719 a month, annual only ($8,628 a year). Everything in Premier plus Performance & Engagement, the custom report builder and additional permission sets, and priority support.

Monthly Standard subscriptions can be cancelled at any time. Annual subscriptions save 20% but are a 12-month commitment that can't be cancelled part-way through.

How Workable AI credits work

Every ATS plan comes with 3,000 complimentary AI credits. Screening a candidate costs 1 credit, sourcing a candidate 2 credits and a completed candidate chat 10 credits. Extra credits are sold in packs: 5,000 at $0.12 each, 10,000 at $0.10 and 50,000 at $0.095. You only pay for the actions the agent actually runs.

Trial and free plan

The 15-day free trial gives access to the Enterprise plan's Recruiting and HR features and doesn't require a credit card, though it doesn't include the Workable Agent. Premium tools are capped during the trial at 500 video interview invitations, 500 assessment invitations and 100 SMS conversations. If you don't subscribe, your account moves to a Free plan where you can view existing candidate data but can't post jobs or contact candidates.

Who Workable is for

Growing companies hiring regularly — a structured ATS without enterprise complexity.

Lean HR and talent teams — AI agents to source and screen at volume.

Companies that want recruiting and HR together — one system from application to employee record.

International teams — nine native languages and wide job board reach.

Getting the most out of Workable

Build a clear Ideal Candidate Profile before switching on the Screening Agent — its rankings are only as good as your criteria.

Use the trial with a real job, but note which Enterprise features you actually use before choosing a plan.

Bundle Recruiting and HR if you need both, to save up to 20%.

Check your headcount band carefully: you pay for total employees, including part-timers and contractors.

Yes, as an HR package with an HR information system, onboarding, time off, time tracking, e-signatures and payroll preparation. Bundling it with recruiting saves up to 20%.

Does Workable do payroll?+

Workable prepares payroll data and integrates with payroll providers, but it isn't a payroll provider itself.

Which Workable plan should I choose?+

Standard suits steady hiring on a budget. Premier adds video interviews, assessments, texting and referrals. Enterprise adds performance tools, custom reporting and advanced permissions.

Is Workable good for small businesses?+

It's well suited to small businesses that hire several times a year. For one or two hires a year, the monthly cost is hard to justify.
