The 30-second verdict

Spotify for Creators is probably the best starting point for someone who wants to launch a podcast without immediately paying for hosting.

It handles the part many beginners find confusing: putting episodes online, creating an RSS feed, distributing the show and monitoring audience activity. The platform can also import an existing show from another host and provide a redirect so the creator keeps their followers and distribution.

Read our full verdict ↓

The main weakness is that Spotify for Creators is not a complete podcast production suite. It does not replace proper recording, editing, thumbnail-design or video-repurposing tools. A typical creator may still need Riverside, Descript, Canva or Opus Clip alongside it.

It is best viewed as the podcast's publishing and audience-management centre rather than the entire production process. For a first-time podcaster, however, that is usually enough. The free hosting, simple interface and connection to Spotify's huge listener base make it an excellent first choice.

What is Spotify for Creators?

Spotify for Creators is Spotify's podcasting platform for independent creators, businesses and publishers. It offers free podcast hosting, unlimited episode uploads, distribution through RSS, video podcast support, analytics, comments, audience tools and several monetisation options.

Its biggest attraction is that creators can start without paying for hosting. Podcasts can be distributed beyond Spotify while still benefiting from Spotify-specific features such as video publishing, comments, audience insights, Memberships and platform-based monetisation.

Creators can either host their show directly with Spotify or continue using another podcast host while using Spotify's creator tools for distribution, analytics and audience engagement.

How Spotify for Creators works

A typical workflow looks like this:

  1. Create or sign in to a Spotify account.
  2. Open Spotify for Creators.
  3. Create a new podcast or import an existing show.
  4. Add the podcast name, description, category and artwork.
  5. Upload an audio or video episode.
  6. Add the title, description, episode number and season details.
  7. Add chapters, transcripts, links or other episode information.
  8. Publish immediately or schedule the episode.
  9. Distribute the show through its RSS feed.
  10. Review analytics and audience engagement.
  11. Improve future episodes based on listener behaviour.

For a brand-new podcast, Spotify for Creators removes much of the technical work. The creator still has to produce something worth listening to, but the publishing process is relatively straightforward.

Key capabilities

Free podcast hosting — Creators can upload episodes and store them without paying a monthly hosting subscription. This reduces the financial risk of starting a podcast so a creator can publish several episodes, test different formats and evaluate listener response before committing to a paid platform.

Audio podcast publishing — Supports conventional audio podcast publishing (interview podcasts, solo commentary, news shows, educational series, storytelling, business and fiction podcasts). Creators upload finished audio files, add episode information and make the episode available on Spotify and other podcast apps through RSS distribution.

Video podcasts — Creators can upload video episodes directly to Spotify while continuing to distribute audio versions through the normal RSS system. This means a creator can publish a video podcast on Spotify without abandoning listeners who prefer audio. Spotify supports video uploads, video analytics, video thumbnails and video monetisation for eligible creators.

Distribution through RSS — The RSS feed acts as the technical connection between the podcast host and listening platforms, allowing episodes to appear in Apple Podcasts and other major podcast applications, subject to each platform's submission and approval process.

Importing an existing podcast — Creators already using another host can search for their show or paste in their RSS feed to import episodes and metadata, followed by a feed redirect from the old host so followers and distribution are preserved.

Analytics — Provides performance data including listener and view counts, episode plays, consumption hours, audience retention, drop-off points, listener demographics, discovery sources, follower growth and audio versus video performance.

Comments, polls and audience interaction — Creators can manage episode comments and run interactive polls to ask what topic to cover next, let listeners choose between guests, test opinions and gather feedback.

Clips and show-page customisation — Supports short promotional clips inside Spotify and customisation of podcast artwork, show descriptions, video thumbnails, categories, links, trailer episodes and featured content.

Scheduling and mobile creator tools — Episodes can be published immediately or scheduled in advance, and managed on the go via the iOS and Android creator apps.

Monetisation options

Spotify Partner Program — Provides revenue from advertising and Premium video consumption. Current requirements include hosting on Spotify for Creators, at least three published episodes, 2,000 Spotify consumption hours in the previous 30 days and at least 1,000 Spotify audience members during the same period (available in selected markets including the UK, US, Canada and Australia). Spotify states that creators receive 50% of the revenue recognised from each Spotify-monetised advertisement placed in their episodes.

Memberships — Replaced Spotify's Podcast Subscriptions system in October 2026, allowing creators to offer bonus episodes, extended episodes, early access, subscriber-only videos and ad-free listening. Requires hosting on Spotify for Creators, at least three published episodes, and at least 100 unique Spotify listeners or viewers and 100 consumption hours in the previous 30 days. Creators keep 100% of subscription earnings apart from payment-processing fees via Stripe.

External membership platforms — Creators can also connect selected external membership platforms such as Patreon, Substack and Supporting Cast so paid content is available to eligible members through Spotify.

  • Advanced multi-show and enterprise publisher tools require Megaphone
  • Comments require active moderation

What to know before paying

  • Not a full recording studio or audio/video editing application — creators still need tools like Riverside, Descript, Canva or Opus Clip

Privacy & data

Spotify for Creators requires a verified Spotify account. Creators receive aggregate audience demographics and retention insights rather than personal identity lists of individual listeners. Public comments on episodes can be moderated by the creator.

Commercial use

Hosting and RSS distribution are free for independent creators, small businesses and brands. Monetisation through the Spotify Partner Program and Memberships is subject to Spotify's eligibility thresholds, supported country list and creator terms.
