The 30-second verdict

Buzzsprout is an excellent choice for a creator who wants a dedicated podcast-hosting platform that feels simple, polished and purpose-built.

The interface is easier to understand than many traditional media-hosting systems. Uploading an episode, adding its title and description, checking directories and scheduling publication are all relatively straightforward.

Read our full verdict ↓

It also offers more than basic hosting. Paid plans include advanced statistics, automatic transcripts, a podcast website, visual soundbites, dynamic content, listener support, subscriptions and advertising options. Current plans also support audio-and-video podcast publishing to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube.

The biggest drawback is pricing. Spotify for Creators can host a podcast for free, whereas Buzzsprout's free plan is primarily a limited trial: it includes two hours of uploads each month, but episodes are hosted for only 90 days.

For a serious podcast that intends to publish regularly, Buzzsprout is much more suitable than its free plan suggests. It is a genuine publishing platform rather than just a temporary experiment.

What is Buzzsprout?

Buzzsprout is a podcast hosting and distribution platform built specifically as a podcast-hosting business rather than as an extension of a larger media platform.

It helps creators upload episodes, distribute them to podcast directories, view analytics, create a podcast website, publish transcripts, add dynamic content and monetise their audience. Its main appeal is simplicity — Buzzsprout handles technical details such as file optimisation, RSS feeds, directory listings and podcast websites, allowing the creator to focus on recording and publishing.

The trade-off is that serious creators need to pay once the free hosting period ends. Paid plans are reasonable for a small show, but the cost becomes more significant for frequent publishers, video podcasts or multiple shows.

Buzzsprout is not primarily a recording application. A typical workflow might be: record the podcast using Riverside, edit the audio or video in Descript, create artwork in Canva, upload the finished episode to Buzzsprout, publish it to podcast directories, monitor analytics, and turn the episode into short clips with Opus Clip.

How Buzzsprout works

A standard Buzzsprout workflow looks like this:

  1. Create a Buzzsprout account.
  2. Choose an audio, video or multi-podcast plan.
  3. Create the podcast profile.
  4. Add the podcast name, description, artwork and category.
  5. Upload an audio or video episode.
  6. Let Buzzsprout optimise the file.
  7. Add episode details and show notes.
  8. Add chapters, transcripts and links.
  9. Schedule or publish the episode.
  10. Submit the podcast to major directories.
  11. Monitor audience analytics.
  12. Use promotion and monetisation tools as the show grows.

Buzzsprout automatically handles many technical details, including file types, bitrates and ID3 tags, and episodes can be scheduled for a future date.

Key capabilities

Podcast hosting — Stores episode media and serves it through the podcast's RSS feed to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music and other listening platforms. Plans include unlimited episodes; the amount of new audio or video that can be uploaded is limited by the chosen plan's upload allowance, and unused upload time does not carry forward.

Audio hosting — Supports solo podcasts, interviews, panel discussions, storytelling, business programmes, educational shows and fiction podcasts, with automatic optimisation of uploaded files.

Video podcast hosting — The Audio + Video plan distributes video at up to 1080p to Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube, while the audio version continues to reach other podcast directories. Buzzsprout distributes the finished video — creators still need Riverside, Descript or a dedicated editor for production.

Podcast distribution — Directory tools for Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Castbox, Podchaser, Castro and Alexa. Distribution makes a show technically available; growth still depends on content quality, consistency and promotion.

Podcast website — Every show gets a website with episode listings, embedded players, directory links, transcripts and custom branding — plus the option to connect a custom domain.

Embeddable podcast player — Add episodes to business websites, blog posts, landing pages, newsletters and courses, with playback speed, social sharing and branding customisation.

Automatic audio optimisation — Handles file types, bitrates, ID3 tags and podcast compatibility automatically. Magic Mastering (a paid add-on described as an Instagram filter for audio) improves loudness and polish, with Power Clean and Filler Killer available for noise and verbal distractions.

Transcripts — Automatic transcripts on paid plans (English, Spanish and French) shown on the podcast website and distributable to apps that support them, plus a transcript editor with Find and Replace, autosave, keyboard shortcuts, speaker-label and chapter editing.

Cohost AI — An optional AI add-on that drafts episode titles, descriptions, chapter markers, blog posts, social posts and transcripts for the creator to review — it does not publish automatically.

Chapter markers — Let listeners jump between sections, useful for interviews, education and business discussions.

Dynamic Content — Add or remove pre-roll and post-roll segments across episodes for announcements, sponsor messages, new-season promotions and calls to action — without re-uploading the whole episode.

Visual Soundbites — Turn podcast audio into shareable visual clips for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, X and YouTube Shorts.

Advanced statistics — IAB 2.2-certified analytics with bot filtering covering downloads, plays, listener trends, technology, geography and directory performance.

Monetisation — Listener Support (recurring contributions), Buzzsprout Subscriptions (premium content priced $3–$10 per month, including ad-free listening) and Buzzsprout Ads (creator-approved advertising placements).

Multiple podcasts and teams — Multi-Podcast plans support several shows with a shared upload allowance, and relevant plans include unlimited team members.

Podcast migration — Tools for importing episodes, confirming the RSS feed and redirecting the old feed from another host.

Strengths, limitations & watch-outs

What it does brilliantly

  • Very easy to use — one of the best beginner experiences in podcasting
  • Designed specifically for podcast hosting rather than general media
  • Automatic audio optimisation removes technical setup work
  • Distribution to all major podcast directories
  • IAB 2.2-certified statistics with bot filtering on every plan
  • Podcast website, embed player and custom domain included
  • Automatic transcripts with a proper transcript editor
  • Chapter markers and Dynamic Content for announcements and sponsors
  • Visual Soundbites for quick social promotion
  • Listener Support, Subscriptions and Ads for monetisation
  • Multi-Podcast plans and unlimited team members
  • Easy migration from another host
  • Free plan for testing without a credit card

Where it falls short

  • Free plan only keeps episodes hosted for 90 days — paid hosting is needed for a permanent show
  • Upload hours are limited per plan and extra time costs more
  • Video publishing requires the more expensive Audio + Video plan
  • Unused upload allowance does not roll over
  • Magic Mastering and Cohost AI are paid add-ons
  • Not a recording or editing tool — creators still need Riverside, Descript or similar
  • Subscription and advertising income depend entirely on audience size and loyalty
  • US-dollar pricing only
  • Larger networks may outgrow it and need enterprise platforms such as Megaphone

What to know before paying

  • Free plan: 2 hours uploads per month and episodes removed after 90 days
  • Audio plan: 6 hours uploads per month (72 hours per year on annual billing)
  • Video limited to 1080p on the Audio + Video plan
  • Multi-Podcast plans share one upload allowance across all shows
  • Additional upload time beyond the plan allowance is billed at the plan's hourly rate
  • Transcription currently supports English, Spanish and French
  • Cohost AI and Magic Mastering require paid add-ons
  • Distribution makes a show available but does not guarantee listeners

Privacy & data

Creators own their podcast content, but the show depends on the hosting account and RSS feed being managed correctly. Analytics are IAB 2.2 certified with bot filtering rather than raw request counts.

Commercial use

Hosting is suitable for independent creators, brands and small businesses. Monetisation through Listener Support, Subscriptions and Ads is subject to Buzzsprout's terms and payment-processing requirements.
