The 30-second verdict

Framer is the best website builder for people who care how their site looks and want it live fast.

The freeform canvas gives you designer-level control without code, and publishing is genuinely instant — no servers, no deployment step, hosting included. The AI Agents are unusually useful here because the generated starting point is a real, editable design rather than a locked template.

Read our full verdict ↓

The honest trade-offs: pricing is per site, monthly billing carries a 50% premium, and Framer is a marketing-site platform — there is no e-commerce, user accounts or backend. If you need a store or an app, look at dedicated tools; for a landing page, portfolio or product site that needs to look expensive by Friday, Framer is the pick.

What is Framer?

Framer is a website builder that works like a design tool and ships like a hosting platform. You design on a freeform canvas — closer to Figma than to a template editor — and publish to a fast global CDN with hosting, SSL and built-in SEO included.

It sits between two camps: easier than Webflow for people who think visually rather than in HTML structure, and far more capable than Wix or Squarespace for custom layouts, effects and animations.

Framer has also folded AI into the build process. AI Agents can generate pages, sections and copy from a prompt, powered by a monthly credit allowance included with each plan. Framer even exposes an MCP server so external AI tools can work with your site.

How Framer works

A typical workflow is:

  1. Start a project from a blank canvas, a template, a Figma import or an AI-generated page.
  2. Lay out sections on the canvas — text, images, video, forms, effects — with breakpoint control for desktop, tablet and mobile.
  3. Add a CMS collection if the site has repeatable content such as blog posts or portfolio items.
  4. Style navigation, transitions and scroll effects.
  5. Preview, then publish to a Framer domain instantly — or attach a custom domain on a paid plan.

Key capabilities

Freeform design canvas — Sections and elements are placed visually with precise control over layout, styling and responsive breakpoints. Designers coming from Figma feel at home; non-designers learn it faster than code.

AI generation — AI Agents generate complete pages and sections from a prompt, rewrite copy and assist with localization. A generated landing page costs roughly 300 credits; Free includes a 500-credit trial allowance, Basic 1,000/month and Pro 3,000/month.

CMS — Repeatable content (blog posts, portfolio items, team pages, changelogs) lives in CMS collections rather than duplicated pages. Limits: 2 collections on Basic, 10 on Pro, expandable on Pro with add-ons up to 40 collections and 40,000 items.

Effects and animations — Scroll effects, hover states, page transitions and animated components are native rather than coded, which is where Framer outclasses simpler builders.

Built-in SEO — Page-level titles, meta, sitemaps, semantic markup and fast hosting come standard. Pro adds redirects for URL management.

Localization — Multi-language sites are supported; one free locale is included to try, with additional locales as an add-on.

Staging and branching — Pro includes a staging environment plus branching with preview links, so changes can be tested and reviewed before going live.

Collaboration — Real-time editing with teammates; the workspace owner is free, additional editors cost $20/month and content-only editors $10/month.

Forms, plugins and code — Native forms, a plugin ecosystem and the option to drop in React code components for anything the canvas cannot express.

Hosting and speed — Publishing is instant with global CDN hosting included: 1 server location on Free, 20 on Basic, 300+ on Pro, with bandwidth tiers of 1 GB, 50 GB and 100 GB respectively.

Strengths, limitations & watch-outs

What it does brilliantly

  • Design-first canvas produces genuinely custom-looking sites
  • Publish-to-live is instant — hosting, SSL and CDN included
  • AI generation is a real head start, not a gimmick
  • CMS covers most content-driven marketing needs
  • Free plan is generous enough to build and evaluate properly
  • $10/mo annual entry is cheaper than most comparable builders
  • Staging and branching give Pro teams a safe release workflow
  • Figma import makes design-to-site nearly seamless
  • Fast output — hosted pages score well on speed

Where it falls short

  • Per-site pricing — several sites each need their own plan
  • Monthly billing costs 50% more than annual on both paid plans
  • Free plan's AI credits are a one-time 500 — not a monthly allowance
  • Basic's 2 CMS collections is tight for content-heavy sites
  • No native e-commerce — selling needs third-party embeds
  • Not a web app platform — no user accounts, database or backend logic
  • Editor seats are billed separately at $20/mo each
  • Some advanced needs (A/B testing, raised limits) are paid add-ons on Pro

What to know before paying

  • Free plan: Framer domain only, 1 GB bandwidth, 500 one-time AI credits, best for non-commercial use
  • Basic: 2 CMS collections, 50 GB bandwidth, no staging or redirects
  • Pro: 10 CMS collections, 100 GB bandwidth; higher limits need paid add-ons (up to 700 pages, 40 collections, 40,000 items, 2 TB)
  • AI credits are shared across the workspace; a generated landing page is roughly 300 credits
  • Editor and content-editor seats bill separately from the site plan
  • No native store, memberships, user auth or server-side logic — those need external tools

Privacy & data

Sites and content are hosted on Framer's infrastructure. Form submissions and analytics data flow through your configured integrations — review Framer's data terms for client sites.

Commercial use

Suitable for client and commercial work on paid plans. Agencies can use Framer's expert programme for free seats inside client projects. The Free plan is positioned for non-commercial use.

Frequently asked questions

What is Framer?+

Framer is a design-led website builder where you lay out pages on a freeform canvas and publish instantly, with hosting, SEO, CMS and AI page generation built in.

Is Framer free?+

There is a free plan that lets you build and publish on a Framer domain with 1 GB bandwidth and a 500-credit AI trial. A custom domain requires a paid plan.

How much does Framer cost?+

Basic is $10/month billed annually ($15 monthly); Pro is $30/month billed annually ($45 monthly); Enterprise is custom. Pricing is per site.

Does Framer charge per site?+

Yes — each published site needs its own Basic or Pro plan. Multiple sites mean multiple subscriptions.

Is monthly billing more expensive?+

Yes. Month-to-month costs roughly 50% more than annual billing on both paid plans, and drops the free first-year custom domain.

What are Framer AI credits?+

Credits power AI features such as page generation and localization. Free gets a one-time 500; Basic gets 1,000/month; Pro gets 3,000/month. A generated landing page costs around 300 credits.

Can Framer build a blog?+

Yes, via CMS collections. Basic includes 2 collections and Pro 10 — enough for blogs, changelogs and portfolio items.

Is Framer good for e-commerce?+

Not natively. There is no built-in store — you would embed a third-party solution. Shopify or a dedicated builder suits stores better.

Does Framer need coding?+

No. Everything is visual, but developers can add React code components for anything the canvas cannot express.

How is Framer different from Webflow?+

Framer is faster to learn and publish with, and more design-tool-like. Webflow offers deeper HTML/CSS control and a stronger CMS for complex sites.

How is Framer different from Wix?+

Framer produces more custom, design-forward sites with better animation control; Wix is simpler for absolute beginners and includes more built-in business apps.

Does Framer include hosting?+

Yes — publishing is instant with global CDN hosting, SSL and a Framer domain included. Pro sites get 300+ server locations.

Can I use my own domain?+

Yes, on paid plans. Annual billing includes the custom domain free for the first year.

Does Framer support team editing?+

Yes — real-time collaboration is built in. The owner is free; extra editors cost $20/month and content editors $10/month.

Can I import from Figma?+

Yes — Figma import brings designs into the canvas, where they can be finished and published.

Is Framer good for SEO?+

Solid for marketing sites: meta controls, sitemaps, semantic markup and fast hosting are built in, and Pro adds redirects.

What is the Framer MCP server?+

A connector that lets external AI assistants work with your Framer site programmatically — included even on the Free plan.

Is Framer worth it?+

For marketing sites and landing pages, yes — the design quality and launch speed justify $10–30/month. For stores or app-like sites, choose a specialist platform instead.
