AskZyro Pick

The receipt-and-invoice capture layer for your accounting software — paperwork in, coded data out.

4.3 / 5Free trial · from £24.17/monthFinance & Accounting Verified 6 November 2026

Best for

Businesses with a steady flow of receipts, bills and expense claims — and the accountants who serve them — that want paperwork captured, coded and published into Xero, QuickBooks or Sage automatically.

Skip it if

You only have a handful of receipts a month (your accounting software's built-in capture may be enough), you want one tool that also invoices and files VAT, or you don't use accounting software at all — Dext is a front end, not a ledger.

The 30-second verdict

Dext is the best tool here for one job: getting paperwork out of your life and into your books without typing.

It reads receipts and invoices reliably, codes them, and publishes them straight into Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, with an archive behind every transaction. For businesses with a steady stream of receipts, bills and expense claims — and for the accountants who look after them — that saves hours every month.

Read our full verdict ↓

But it's a front end, not an accounting system. You still need accounting software, and both Xero and QuickBooks now include their own receipt capture, so Dext has to earn its £290 a year (excluding VAT) through volume, accuracy and features like line-item, supplier-statement and bank-statement extraction.

If you're drowning in receipts or your accountant recommends it, start the 14-day trial — no card needed — with a real month of paperwork. If you only handle a few documents a month, your accounting software's built-in capture is probably enough.

What is Dext?

Dext (formerly Receipt Bank) is bookkeeping automation software that takes the paperwork out of accounting. You photograph a receipt, forward a supplier invoice or upload a bank statement, and Dext reads the supplier, date, amounts and VAT, codes it, and publishes it straight into your accounting software.

It is important to understand what Dext is not: it is not a full accounting package. It doesn't send sales invoices, run payroll or file VAT returns for a business. It sits in front of software like Xero, QuickBooks or Sage and feeds it clean, coded data. That's why it's especially popular with accountants and bookkeepers — Dext says more than 700,000 businesses and 12,000 accounting and bookkeeping firms use it.

For a business owner, the value is time and tidiness: no shoebox of receipts, no typing figures into a ledger, and a searchable archive of every document if HMRC or the IRS asks questions.

How Dext works

A typical workflow is:

  1. Connect Dext to your accounting software, such as Xero, QuickBooks or Sage.
  2. Capture documents: photograph receipts in the mobile app, email invoices to your Dext address, or upload files.
  3. Dext extracts the key data — supplier, date, totals and tax — and suggests categories.
  4. Review and approve items, or let AI Assist make the routine bookkeeping calls.
  5. Publish to your accounting software, already coded, where they're matched to bank transactions.
  6. Keep the original documents stored and searchable in Dext.

Key capabilities

Receipt and invoice capture — Photograph, email or upload receipts and bills; Dext reads them automatically.

Automatic data extraction — Supplier, date, amounts and tax are extracted and coded for you.

Accounting software integrations — Publishes into Xero, QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Sage and many other platforms.

Expense claims — Team members submit and approve expenses without spreadsheets.

Document storage — A searchable archive of every receipt and invoice.

Multi-entity support — Manage several businesses or departments under one account, with separate access and reporting.

Bank statement extraction — Turn PDF bank statements into usable transactions; 10 sheets a month are included.

Line item extraction — Split one receipt into separate line items and cost codes; 5 documents a month are included.

Supplier statement extraction — Check that every invoice and credit note on a supplier statement is accounted for, with gaps and duplicates flagged; 5 a month included.

AI Assist — An AI bookkeeping agent that makes routine decisions for you, while you keep the final say.

Payments — Pay suppliers from the same place you filed their invoices.

Vault — Store contracts, licences and certificates, with Dext tracking key dates.

Commerce Lite — Pulls in online sales reports so you only need to check the totals.

Dext plans explained

Dext prices its business plan on two sliders: the number of users and the number of documents processed each month.

Business plan (UK) — from £24.17 a month on annual billing (£290 a year, excluding VAT) for 5 users and 250 documents a month. Annual billing is up to 19% cheaper than monthly.

Business plan (US) — from $25.21 a month on annual billing ($302.50 a year) for the same 5 users and 250 documents; independent reviews put month-to-month billing at about $31.50.

Every plan includes free credits each month: 10 sheets of bank statement extraction, 5 line-item documents and 5 supplier statements.

UK add-ons: AI Assist £7.50 a month (a promotional price until 31 January 2027), Commerce Lite from £5 a month, Payments from 25p per payment, Vault free up to 100MB then from £2 a month, Line Item Extraction and Supplier Statement Extraction from £16.50 a month each (or from 40p a document pay-as-you-go), and Bank Statement Extraction from £10 a month (or from 25p a document).

Businesses with more than 5 entities can ask for bespoke pricing. Accounting and bookkeeping firms buy through separate practice plans.

Trial, limits and cancelling

There's a 14-day free trial and Dext doesn't ask for card details to start it. If you hit your monthly document limit, you can still upload documents, but data won't be extracted until your next billing date or until you upgrade. Monthly plans can be cancelled at any time before renewal; annual plans need 30 days' notice before the renewal date.

Who Dext is for

Businesses with lots of receipts and bills — trades, construction, hospitality, retail and professional services.

Teams with expense claims — staff capture and submit receipts on their phones.

Businesses working with an accountant — clean, coded data your accountant can trust.

Multi-entity businesses and franchises — several companies managed from one account.

Getting the most out of Dext

Connect it to your accounting software on day one, so everything publishes straight into your books.

Set up supplier rules early: once Dext knows how to code a supplier, it does it automatically.

Check your monthly volume against the 250-document allowance — extraction pauses when you hit it.

Use the trial with a real month of receipts; it's the only reliable way to judge accuracy for your suppliers.
