Best for

Students and language learners who need to memorise terms, vocabulary and definitions, and want ready-made sets, adaptive quizzing and practice tests before exams.

You want unlimited adaptive study for free (Learn and Test are now mostly paid), you mainly need to understand concepts deeply rather than memorise, or you want to study from long documents (a source-grounded tool like NotebookLM fits better).

The 30-second verdict

Quizlet is still the best app for memorising — vocabulary, terms, definitions and anything that suits flashcards.

Its huge shared library means you can often start studying in seconds, and Learn mode is genuinely effective, adapting questions as you improve. AI practice tests are a useful addition for exam season.

The free version is less generous than it used to be. Flashcards, games and your own sets are still free, but Learn and Test are now largely paid, and the cheaper Plus plan still caps practice tests and Learn rounds each month. For serious exam prep, Plus Unlimited at about $44.99 a year is the plan to choose.

If you need to memorise, start free and upgrade to Plus Unlimited yearly before exams. If you need to understand long readings rather than memorise terms, pair it with NotebookLM.

What is Quizlet?

Quizlet is one of the most popular study apps in the world. It started as a flashcard maker and has grown into a full study platform: you create (or find) sets of terms and definitions, then study them with flashcards, games, adaptive quizzing, practice tests and expert-written textbook solutions.

Its biggest advantage is its library. Millions of flashcard sets already exist across almost every subject, exam and textbook, so you can often start studying immediately instead of making cards from scratch. Teachers also use it to share sets with their classes and run Quizlet Live, a team-based classroom game.

Quizlet has added AI in recent years. It can turn uploaded notes into flashcards and full-length practice tests that simulate a real exam, and its Learn mode adapts to what you know, making questions harder as you improve. The catch is that the most useful study modes — Learn and Test — are now largely behind a subscription, while the free version keeps flashcards, games and your own sets.

How Quizlet works

A typical study routine is:

  1. Find an existing set for your topic, or create one — typing cards, importing a list or generating cards from your notes.
  2. Review with Flashcards, sorting cards into "still learning" and "know".
  3. Use Learn to work through progressively harder questions until you've mastered the set.
  4. Take a Test or an AI Practice Test to check how you'd perform in a real exam.
  5. Play Match or other games for quick revision.
  6. Use expert solutions for help with homework problems from your textbook.

Quizlet plans explained

Free — make unlimited sets and study with Flashcards, Match and other games, with ads. You get limited rounds of Learn per set, one practice Test per set and limited access to AI Practice Tests.

Quizlet Plus — about $35.99 a year, or about $7.99 a month. Ad-free study, offline access and premium tools with monthly limits: 3 practice tests, 3 Q&A and textbook solutions, and 20 rounds of Learn questions a month, plus unlimited games and activities.

Quizlet Plus Unlimited — about $44.99 a year, or about $9.99 a month. Complete access to practice tests, unlimited rounds of Learn, expert textbook solutions, custom study paths and progress tracking.

Quizlet Family — about $83.99 a year (annual only). Shares a Plus Unlimited subscription with up to 4 additional members, each with their own account.

Quizlet Plus for teachers — an annual teacher plan, with a free trial.

Paid plans renew automatically — annual subscriptions are billed every year until you cancel. Quizlet offers a 7-day free trial, but it requires payment details, so cancel before it ends if you don't want to be charged. Prices vary by country.

Who Quizlet is for

High school and university students — memorising terms, vocabulary, formulas and definitions.

Language learners — vocabulary practice with audio.

Exam preparation — practice tests and adaptive Learn sessions before tests.

Teachers — sharing sets and running classroom games.

Getting the most out of Quizlet

Search the library first — there may already be a good set for your course or textbook, but check it for accuracy.

Make your own cards from your notes for anything that will be on your exam — writing them helps you learn.

Choose Plus Unlimited over Plus if you study heavily; Plus's 20 Learn rounds and 3 practice tests a month run out quickly.

Pay yearly if you'll use it for more than a few months — monthly billing costs far more over a year.
