The 30-second verdict

Adobe Firefly has developed into a comprehensive creative AI workspace rather than remaining a simple image generator.

It can generate and edit images, video, audio and vector graphics. Firefly also brings together models from Adobe, Google, OpenAI, Runway, Kling AI, Luma, ElevenLabs and other providers within one interface.

Read our full verdict ↓

Its greatest strength is its connection to Adobe's professional creative ecosystem. Generated assets can move into Photoshop, Adobe Express, Illustrator, Premiere and other supported applications for further editing and production.

Adobe also places greater emphasis than many competitors on commercially focused training data, content authenticity and business deployment. Adobe states that its commercial Firefly models are trained on licensed material such as Adobe Stock, openly licensed content and public-domain material.

The main disadvantage is the generative-credit system. Standard image features are unlimited on paid Firefly plans, but premium video, audio and partner-model generations consume credits at different rates. This can make the true cost difficult to predict.

Firefly is an excellent choice for professional creators, marketing teams and existing Adobe customers. Users who only want unrestricted artistic image generation may find Midjourney, Recraft or Ideogram simpler.

What is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is an AI-powered creative platform developed by Adobe. It allows users to generate and edit images, videos, audio and vector graphics using written instructions, uploaded references and Adobe's visual editing tools. Firefly began as a collection of generative AI models integrated into Adobe products. It has since expanded into a standalone creative application containing Adobe models and selected third-party AI models. Users can access Firefly through its website and mobile applications. Firefly technology is also integrated into products including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Express, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Stock and Adobe Creative Cloud. The exact features and generative-credit allowances depend on the user's Firefly or Creative Cloud subscription. A user selects an image, video, audio or design feature and describes the desired result through a text prompt. Firefly then processes the instruction using the chosen Adobe or partner model. Depending on the selected tool, users can also upload a reference image, upload an existing video, use a sketch as a structural guide, select an aspect ratio, adjust visual styles, control composition, choose a camera angle, add or remove objects, expand an image beyond its original borders, generate multiple variations, select a particular AI model, continue editing the result and transfer the asset into another Adobe application. Firefly provides access to selected third-party image, video and audio models from providers including Adobe, Google, OpenAI, Runway, Kling AI, Black Forest Labs, Luma AI, ElevenLabs and Topaz Labs. Availability, credit costs and terms depend on the selected model and plan. Standard and premium generations may consume generative credits. The number of credits depends on the chosen model, resolution, duration and feature.

  • Generative Fill and Generative Expand
  • Professional Photoshop integration
  • Adobe Express Premium included with higher plans
  • Useful video-generation tools
  • Video and audio translation
  • AI voiceover generation
  • Sound-effect generation
  • Music and soundtrack generation
  • Firefly Boards for visual planning
  • Mood-board and storyboard creation
  • Commercially focused Adobe model training
  • Content Credentials support
  • Suitable for professional production
  • Custom Models for brand consistency

  • Web and mobile availability
  • Free plan with daily generations
  • Unlimited standard image features on paid plans
  • Strong enterprise options
  • Useful APIs for large-scale content generation
  • Familiar workflow for existing Adobe customers

Where it falls short

  • Credit system can be confusing
  • Premium features can consume credits quickly
  • Video generation is expensive in credits
  • Different models have different credit costs
  • Some plans are expensive
  • Premium is unnecessary for most casual users
  • Generated results still require quality control
  • Partner models have separate terms and limitations
  • Commercial assurances vary by model
  • Some capabilities remain in beta
  • Video clips may be short
  • Precise image composition can require several attempts
  • Generated text inside images may be inconsistent
  • AI output may contain visual errors
  • The interface contains many overlapping tools
  • Advanced editing may require Photoshop or another Adobe application
  • Promotional unlimited-generation offers may expire
  • Generative credits generally do not accumulate
  • Availability can vary by country, plan and account

What to know before paying

  • Firefly Standard is suitable for users who primarily create images and occasionally generate video or audio.
  • Firefly Pro offers the best overall value for regular creators because it adds more credits, Adobe Express Premium and Photoshop on web and mobile.
  • Firefly Pro Plus is intended for heavier users creating larger quantities of images, video and campaign material.
  • Firefly Premium is designed for agencies, production teams and businesses with substantial video-generation requirements.
  • The number of credits should be considered alongside the intended type of content. Two thousand credits can support many standard image tasks, but high-resolution video generation can use the same allowance quickly.
  • Temporary unlimited-generation promotions should not be treated as permanent plan benefits.
  • Users planning commercial projects should check whether they are using an Adobe Firefly model or a partner model, because the applicable training data, terms and protections may differ.
  • Generative credits are used to access supported AI features in Firefly and other eligible Adobe applications. The number of credits consumed depends on selected model, feature, resolution, video duration, audio duration, standard or premium classification and current promotional allowance.
  • Monthly generative credits generally reset on the plan's billing date rather than accumulating indefinitely.

Privacy & data

Adobe states that it does not train its Firefly models on the personal content of Creative Cloud subscribers.

Adobe's commercial Firefly models have been trained using material such as licensed Adobe Stock content, openly licensed content and public-domain content where copyright has expired. Adobe Stock contributor content may be included according to the applicable contributor licence agreements.

User prompts, generated outputs and uploaded content may still be processed, stored or reviewed as described in Adobe's privacy and product terms.

Business users should review the Adobe Privacy Policy, Adobe Generative AI User Guidelines, Firefly product terms, partner-model terms, organisational data policies and Custom Model agreements.

Adobe supports Content Credentials for eligible Firefly-generated content. Content Credentials can contain information about the application used, whether generative AI was involved, how an asset was created and edited, and the model or process involved. These credentials are designed to improve transparency around digital content. Content Credentials do not guarantee that an image is accurate, lawful or free from third-party rights.

Commercial use

Adobe allows Firefly output from features without a beta label to be used in commercial projects, subject to its applicable terms. Output from beta features may also be used commercially unless the product explicitly states otherwise.

Commercial users remain responsible for reviewing generated content, checking trademarks and recognisable brands, confirming model and property-release requirements, avoiding misleading content, protecting personal information, following advertising standards, complying with partner-model terms, checking applicable copyright law and confirming whether enterprise indemnification applies.

Adobe's commercially safe positioning applies most directly to Adobe's own commercial Firefly models. Third-party models available through Firefly may have different training sources and commercial conditions.

Eligible enterprise customers may receive intellectual-property indemnification for certain Firefly-generated output under their agreements. Beta features and partner models may not receive equivalent protection.
